Custom Cedar Deck Railing

Process shots of the custom cedar deck railing built from scratch for the backyard patio entrance.

  • The pieces are joined with dowels—this method creates a strong joint without the use of nails and using a doweling jig keeps the holes centered and straight.

  • Dry fitting in the workshop before the final glue and stain helps ensure the pieces fit together precisely.

  • Pre-staining, then one coat of varnish, then sanding in the workshop keeps the pieces clean and able to dry thoroughly before assembly onsite.

  • Once installed, one final sand and varnish coat (check out how water-resistant the wood is now!)
